The speaker, Elaine Parnell, is a retired journalist/TV/documentary producer and has been a member of u3a since 2021. Elaine spent most of her career living overseas and has covered many stories including the Hong Kong handover to China in 1997 and the Russian occupation of Afghanistan in the 80s.

What the talk is about

Briefly back in the UK during the late 1990s, Elaine produced stories on Winston Churchill’s Secret Army, the Special Operations Executive (SOE), and this is the focus of the talk. SOE was set up to wage irregular warfare behind enemy lines and her talk will look at the role that the local area played in training agents with a particular focus on some of the women who were sent into occupied France.
