This group evolved out of the Current Affairs group which looks at a range of issues at each meeting. By contrast the Contemporary Issues group looks at one issue at each meeting and does so in some depth with one of the members writing a paper on that issue which is then circulated to members of the group and discussed at the meeting. A wide range of social, economic, political and philosophical issues have been covered over the past few years across the local, national and international spectrum. Recent subjects have included Artificial Intelligence, Migration, and Britain's Railways.

The group has over forty members and attendance at each meeting is usually about twenty. The member who wrote the paper leads the meeting and all those present are able to comment on the issue under discussion. Our members have wide and diverse experience both here and in many cases in other countries and all are able to contribute. We don't solve the world's problems but we all learn from one another.
